2022 Bathroom Flooring Trends: 20+ Updated Styles

Ask any real estate agent and they will tell you that the best way to increase the value of your home is to update either the bathroom or the kitchen. They’re the rooms in the home that see the most traffic, especially the bathroom. But how do you keep your bathroom current? By keeping up with 2022 bathroom flooring trends.

Of course, the design and overall tone of any room start with your floor. It’s one of the biggest purchases you will make in any home update. To find the best flooring for bathrooms, you’ll want to consider your style and which looks will stand the test of time should you decide to sell.

To get your luxurious bathroom off to the right start, you’ll want to see what’s trending with bathroom floors. Luckily, there’s a lot is happening in flooring in 2022. Let’s take a look.

“As with years past, bathroom floor tile trends lend themselves to style and function. The tile needs to be able to perform in these spaces as well as looking it’s best. Choosing a tile with texture is always on trend for any bathroom. By using a textured tile, it will perform as an anti-slip surface when wet as well as bring some interest to your space. If marble is what you are looking for, the porcelain options that look like marble are a great alternative to getting a timeless design that will perform with water and wear and need virtually no maintenance.” – Cynthia Flottmann, Roux Design Studio

2022 Trending Bathroom Flooring Types

Looking for the best flooring for bathrooms? The first thing you need to decide is what type of floor you’ll be using.

It used to be that tile and stone were virtually the only options designed to stand up to a full bathroom, but that is not the case anymore – not by a long shot.

Technological innovations have made it possible to choose just about any type of flooring for any application. Right now, there is a big surge in waterproof flooring, which you’ll see a lot of in this year’s trendiest bathroom floor ideas.

Waterproof Vinyl Bathroom Flooring

The stars of the waterproof flooring game: WPC and SPC vinyl bathroom flooring. This trend has been going for just about the last decade and only seems to be growing as we head into 2022.

WPC flooring has a core made of wood plastic composite that is 100% waterproof, a luxury vinyl print layer, and a thick, durable wear layer. WPC flooring is luxury vinyl amped up a few notches, dominating the world of waterproof flooring.

SPC, also known as rigid core vinyl, is the next level in waterproof vinyl flooring. SPC flooring has a core made from stone plastic composite, making for a tougher, sturdier core than WPC flooring.

Appearance-wise, there is no difference between rigid core vinyl and traditional WPC vinyl. Both options offer the trendiest, most realistic looks mimicking natural materials in the highest quality prints.

The big difference is construction. SPC rigid core flooring is traditionally thinner and even more durable. Additionally, rigid core planks are also better at hiding imperfect subfloors. If you are installing over tile or another unlevel surface, SPC is a great option that can save you some money in prep and installation without sacrificing style.

With waterproof vinyl, it’s the best of all worlds for your bathroom floor. Expect to see WPC and SPC bathroom flooring following all the hottest wood and stone trends, including marble, handscraped and distressed looks, large planks/tiles, and more.

Will the waterproof vinyl bathroom flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Absolutely! WPC and SPC vinyl floors are the fastest growing floors on market, particularly in bathrooms, kitchens, and other water-prone areas. The looks will only get more convincing.

Bathroom Tile

hexagon tiles in a bathroom setting

Tile is known for being durable, waterproof, and easy to clean – perfect for any room. Especially the bathroom. But with the surge in wood-look flooring options, is tile on its way out?

Not at all! Bathroom floor tile is still as trendy as it ever was. However, the trending bathroom floor tile looks have truly evolved over the last 5-10 years. You see, something technology has given us is the ability to achieve virtually any look with any type of flooring.

The wood-look tile bathroom flooring trend is super hot right now. Tile manufacturers are keeping up with the times and following the trends of contemporary wood and stone. This means you can have the sleek, current bathroom of your dreams with good ol’ dependable tile flooring.

Additionally, the classic marble look is still extremely popular, especially in high-end homes. However, homeowners are now achieving this look at half the price and with way less maintenance by using porcelain and ceramic tile that looks like traditional marble.

Will the bathroom tile trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Absolutely! I predict that bathroom floor tile ideas will never fully go out of style.

I just recommend following the current wood and stone flooring trends to get a tile look that will stay the current lifetime of your floor.

Waterproof Laminate Bathroom Flooring

Bathroom Flooring Trends: 12mm Mohawk Boardwalk Waterproof Laminate

While laminate is known as the original wood-look flooring, it wasn’t until recently that it started popping up in bathrooms. Previously, many people used it in other water-prone areas, like kitchens, but the bathroom? That was still off-limits.

That is until manufacturers developed a 100% waterproof laminate option. Yes, now, like vinyl, laminate has options that are fully waterproof and suitable for bathrooms, basements, kitchens, and more.

Available in looks and textures that effortlessly mimic gorgeous, trending hardwood looks, waterproof laminate can give your bathroom a trendy upgrade.

Will the laminate bathroom flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

It will look great and be a valid option, but I think vinyl has the edge on the waterproof market and I don’t see laminate stealing that edge anytime soon. But with how affordable waterproof laminate is, it’s also an excellent alternative.

Sheet Vinyl Bathroom Flooring

Bathroom Flooring Trends: Mannington Benchmark 6' Vinyl Sheet

A little different from vinyl planks, there’s sheet vinyl. It might sound a little out there, but with the latest advancements to sheet vinyl, it’s a viable option. Plus, because of its fun, unique patterns, and low price point, it’s a hit for new homeowners.

Sheet vinyl used to be down-and-out of the flooring game because of its lack of durability. It was once known for peeling and it wouldn’t stay put after installation.

But that’s all changed.

Now, sheet vinyl is resistant to water and slipping. Plus it comes in beautiful patterns to give your bathroom a unique look. So you can live your fresh flooring dreams in 2022.

Worried about a difficult installation? You’ll be glad to know that once you make the necessary cuts to your vinyl sheet, it’s as simple as rolling out the sheet and laying it flat. After that, the flooring will stay put under its weight.

Will the sheet vinyl bathroom flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

This trend will certainly live on throughout 2022. As for the long haul, I’d give it the next 10-15 years to phase out.

Waterproof Bathroom Carpets and Rugs

Weave Carpet Tiles

Wait! I promise this will not be gross.

Remember the 1980s bathroom carpet? It was the worst. Soft and comforting, yes. But it would trap all the water from your showers and often develop a weird texture, or even worse, mold. Yuck!

But there was a reason people did that, right? The carpet is warm, soft, and comforting. It sure beats slipping on the wet tile when you get out of the shower.

Over the next few years, I expect to see this trend creep back in with the appearance of 100% waterproof carpet on the market. Yes – waterproof carpet!

Waterproof in general seems to be the trend over the last decade, which is great news for anyone looking to update their bathroom. Where homeowners were once limited by fear of water damage, they can now install just about any type of flooring in any room of the home.

Will the bathroom carpet trend last in 2022 and beyond?

I think this trend is regional. In states that see a lot of cold weather, waterproof carpet in your bathroom can be a nice luxury for those cold early mornings. So, the trend might last for the next 15 years. For the warmer states, not so much.

2022 Trending Bathroom Flooring Looks

In the past, there haven’t been many new or unexpected bathroom flooring looks. The same ol’ stone and stone-look bathroom floor tiles appeared in practically every bathroom in every home.

But now? The time has come for something different!

Now that there are a plethora of gorgeous, stylish wood-look and designer bathroom floor tiles and planks to choose from. Let’s take a look.

Wood-Look Bathroom Flooring

Wood look bathroom flooring: 12mm Mohawk Sawmill Ridge Waterproof Laminate

While wood looks have been trending in other rooms of the home for decades, this is a relatively new thing for bathrooms. Just a few years ago, if you saw a bathroom that looked like it had wood flooring, it was quite surprising.

Solid hardwood flooring is expensive, finicky, and not ideal for areas where there will be a lot of moisture, like bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. While people would take the risk in an area like a kitchen, bathrooms just have too much water to make natural hardwood flooring a viable option.

Even laminate flooring hasn’t been an option for bathrooms until recently. While it offers a lower price point and, typically, lower maintenance than solid hardwood, it’s honestly no better of a bathroom flooring idea than hardwood.

Unless it’s waterproof! Waterproof laminate is new and awesome and trending!

Wood-look planks come in different types of flooring, such as laminate, WPC vinyl, and SPC vinyl. There are also wood-look ceramic and porcelain tiles. All of these flooring gems are perfect for the high demands of any bathroom.

With these new, durable, and waterproof wood looks, you can achieve any trending wood style in your bathroom, worry-free.

Will the wood-look bathroom flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

1,000 times, yes! Wood-look flooring is a trend across the entire home that isn’t going away anytime soon.

This trend will only increase, both in the bathroom and out, over the next decade and beyond.

Marble-Look Bathroom Flooring

Although marble has always been a staple piece of many bathrooms, marble or marble look flooring is a trend we can’t ignore. Many of the chicest homes showcase this gorgeous, timeless look.

So why has marble stood the test of time? That’s simple: it’s expensive. At least, traditional marble is expensive, and people love the expensive look. That’s the beauty of tiles that mimic marble: you get the gorgeous look, for a fraction of the cost.

Of course, with the influx in wood-look bathroom flooring, there was always a chance that marble bathroom tiles would become less popular. But, I think this is one of those floors that truly stands the test of time.

Will the marble-look bathroom flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Yes, always and forever. This is one of the rare looks that never seems to go out of style, making it an excellent choice if you’re concerned about selling your home in the future.

Stenciled Designer Tile Bathroom Flooring

Bathroom Flooring: Shaw Revival Isabella 8

While natural looks like wood and stone are trending in a big way, young homeowners are steering towards more intricate designs and modern looks.

When I say designer, I mean any looks that don’t resemble natural materials – shapes, intricate patterns, metallic looks, and designs in general. They can be so detailed that they look like they’ve been stenciled onto the floor.

Stenciled tiles are sometimes ceramic encaustic tiles, which are known for their beautiful detailed designs. These designs look hand-crafted, which gives the bathroom floor a custom vibe, even when they’re not custom made, making the floor look expensive, as well as impressive.

Popular styles range from geometrics to florals, to old-world and Victorian. You can expect a bold, highly detailed style, with a lot of colors. Stenciled designer bathroom tiles are likely to be the talk of the house in 2022.

Will the designer bathroom flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Perhaps in 2022, but not for the long haul. These specialty, designer looks don’t tend to stick around for the long haul as the designs become outdated. They are trendy but not long-lasting.

2022 Trending Bathroom Flooring Colors

In bathrooms, cool, bright colors are trending in a big way. While in kitchens, bedrooms, and living rooms you’ll see some warm, blonde wood looks making a splash in 2022, bathrooms are all about cool, calming tones.

Most bathrooms don’t have a lot of open space and dark colors can make them look crowded, compact, or even cave-like. That’s why you’ll see lots of brights and plenty of white.

Additionally, the bathroom is supposed to be calm and relaxing, like your own personal sanctuary. It’s where you go to get away from it all. That’s why cool tones continue to reign this year’s bathroom flooring trends.

White Bathroom Flooring

White bathroom floor tiles make your space look bigger – something particularly important for most bathrooms. They can also match any backsplash, wall tiles, or other design elements you incorporate into your space.

Black and White Bathroom Flooring

FlooringInc bathroom flooring trends: Shaw Revival Josefina

This vintage look is resurfacing! Over the last several years, we’ve seen it mostly in the kitchen, but in 2022, you will see black and white bathroom flooring ideas, as well.

In the kitchen, we typically see this in a retro checkerboard pattern, but in the bathroom, you’ll see much more fun, modern black and white tile patterns. Expect to see black and white subway tiles and floral designs in the bathrooms of many young homeowners over the next few years.

This is a nice, clean way to add design but still provide a neutral backdrop where you can use color in the rest of your decor.

Will the black and white bathroom flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

I think this is one of those trends that may stick around for 5-10 years but not forever. It doesn’t have that timeless feel that ensures homeowners that people will want to purchase their home when it’s time to sell.

Gray flooring, particularly gray wood, has grown exponentially over the last decade. Although gray bathroom floor tiles, particularly in stone looks, are also quite popular.

Gray has quickly become the most popular trend, not just for flooring, but for home decor in general. Gray cabinets, gray doors, you name it. And every shade of gray is still hot and trendy in the bathroom. For your floors and decor.

In addition to looking chic and trendy, gray floors set the tone of a cool, contemporary bathroom. They, like white, give you a neutral backdrop for decorating in basically any color. Aquas, greens, bright bold colors, or even black and white classic tones – they will all go with your sleek gray flooring.

Cool Blue Bathroom Flooring

FlooringInc 2021 bathroom flooring trends: waterproof decorative cool blue vinyl planks

This is about as “extreme” as we get with this year’s bathroom flooring color trends. Most of these trends are neutral and understated, but a cool blue or gray-blue can add a nice color pop without going over the edge.

The gray-blue bathroom flooring trend is one of the more popular shades of blue as it’s more subdued and easier to complement the decor. More than likely the gray-blue color trend will last longer than brighter blues.

I mentioned that you want your bathroom to feel like your own personal spa. Something about the right shade of blue can make you feel almost like you’re at the ocean, offering a sense of calming and peace.

Will the cool blue bathroom flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

I foresee homeowners sticking to the more neutral grays and whites, so unless you stick with a gray-blue, I don’t think the bright blue bathroom floors will be a long-lived trend. But they may still pop up now and then adding a nice little splash of color to an otherwise neutral space.

Blonde Wood Bathroom Flooring

2021 Bathroom Flooring Trends: Blond wood-look vinyl planks in a bathroom setting

As more homeowners embrace the light, airy feel in their home, you will see a huge resurgence in blonde wood bathroom floor tiles and planks. This light, breezy wood look can give your bathroom a look that somehow feels both classic and contemporary.

While most of this year’s trending colors are on the cooler end of the spectrum, blonde wood brings in a little warmth while maintaining a cool, relaxed feel.

The open, light, airy look is especially popular in modern bathrooms. Homeowners are now steering away from sharper, modern, industrial looks and trending towards an updated farmhouse style. Light floors are perfect for this!

Blonde floors make your bathroom feel larger and more open, especially if you use large planks. But we’ll get to that later on.

Will the blonde wood bathroom flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Absolutely! Wood looks are a relatively new bathroom style trend, but as that trend grows, beachy blondes will lead the way sticking with always-classic bathroom brights.

2022 Bathroom Flooring Trends: Layout and Pattern

Patterned bathroom tile isn’t exactly a new concept. The bathroom is probably the one room in the home where the trend of patterns, funky layouts, and cool styles has remained constant. However, now this trend is moving to other rooms in the house and has become even more popular in the bathroom, and it’s still important to choose the right patterns.

The big layout and pattern trends this year throughout the home are chevron, herringbone, and mixed-width planks. But in the bathroom, you can get a little more creative. Let’s check it out.

Chevron and Herringbone Bathroom Flooring

Chevron vs. Herringbone Patterns Graphic

First, let me clear up a little misconception. Chevron and herringbone mosaics are very similar, but each has its distinction. Chevron and Herringbone Bathroom Flooring

Chevron floors require flooring to be angled and come together to a point. Although, some ceramic tiles and vinyl tiles are even producing products with the chevron pattern in the tile itself.

Herringbone achieves a similar look by connecting two planks at a 90-degree angle as seen above. This layout makes a more narrow-angle, which makes a space look and feel larger.

For wood-look flooring planks, herringbone is much more accessible than chevron. As for bathroom tile, both patterns come as pre-assembled mosaics. So you can save time and money on bathroom flooring materials and installation.

Will the chevron and herringbone bathroom flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

I expect you’ll see herringbone and chevron bathroom floor tiles for at least the next decade and, perhaps, even longer.

Subway Tile Bathroom Flooring

Bathroom Flooring Trends- Subway tile layout

Not just for backsplash anymore!

Previously, small, busy subway tiles were only used as wall tiles. However, over the last couple of years, we’ve seen a surge in subway tile bathroom floors.

When you imagine subway tiles, there are a few things that come to mind. You may imagine small, brick-like tiles or hundreds of penny rounds or even mini hexagons like pictured above. The subway tile look isn’t really about shape, but more about the size and aesthetic.

The small tiles create a fun vintage look in the bathroom that, with the right decor, can look incredibly charming.

Additionally, many small tiles will make your bathroom look smaller and feel busier. But if there’s anywhere they can work, it’s the bathroom, particularly as shower tile as they are slip-resistant.

Will the subway tile bathroom flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

I think they’ll stay young-homeowner-trendy over the next decade or so, but I definitely wouldn’t recommend them if you’re looking to make your home more sellable in the future.

Hexagon Bathroom Flooring

Hexagon tile flooring in a bathroom setting

Hexagon tiles first gained popularity in the early 20th century, typically accompanied by subway wall tiles. They can provide a similar classic, vintage look to subway tile floors.

Small, mosaic hexagonal tiles make for a classic, yet fun bathroom floor. Large format hexagonal tiles, however, create a chic modern bathroom floor, especially if you add the right grout color with the tiles.

You’ll also see ultra-modern, almost futuristic looks over the next several years. Imagine super clean sharp lines, whites, blacks and grays, and very minimalist decor. That’s this new futuristic wave of hexagon bathroom floor tiles.

Will the hexagon bathroom flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Sparingly. I do believe you’ll continue to see hexagon tile bathroom floors over the next decade. But, the bigger trend will continue to be larger tiles and planks. This is more of a niche market.

Wide Plank Bathroom Flooring

FlooringInc 2020 bathroom flooring trends: whitewashed wood-look tile

This is one trend you can expect to see every year in every style for the foreseeable future. Longer, wider planks make your bathroom look larger, more open, and less busy. Bathrooms tend to be smaller and more crowded and this is the best way to combat that.

The days of shorter, traditionally sized planks are over. Wide planks are becoming the new normal as they streamline the floor in every room.

Manufacturers are only trending towards even wider and longer planks. This trend will soon become a classic staple and will likely last the test of time.

Contrasting the tiny little subway tiles, you will see plenty of the extreme opposite: extra-large tiles. This trend has been trending for quite some time with manufacturers continuing to create larger and larger individual tiles.

Wonder why they’re so popular? Large-format tiles, like long, wide planks, make your bathroom look bigger, especially if you choose a light color. Additionally, larger tiles = fewer grout lines. Win, win.

While square tiles are on their way out in other rooms of the home, this classic style will always stay relevant in the bathroom, and you’ll continue to see plenty of big, beautiful, marble bathroom floor tiles over the next several years.

Geometric Bathroom Flooring

Geometric tile in a bathroom setting

“Geometric flooring” is a fairly open-ended term. It just means using different shapes to create eye-catching patterns. Luckily, 2022 is full of fun-shaped flooring to create a statement-making bathroom floor.

Common geometric shapes include:

Hexagon: Created in both large and mosaic formats, hexagonal flooring is seen as modern and minimalistic with its clean, sharp lines. Fan: Fan tiles can look modern, retro, whimsical, or contemporary and create a dynamic statement as bathroom flooring.Round: Circular floor tiles are bringing some modern whimsy to your floors. Also known as penny rounds, these mosaic tiles are patterned with small coin-sized circles. Arabesque: For curly, intricate-shaped flooring, arabesque is the way to go. These tiles will make your bathroom the hit of the house with its dainty, unique shape. TriangleTriangle shapes are versatile when it comes to flooring. They are easy to decorate around and add a subtle statement and flair to your bathroom.DiamondFor a more luxurious bathroom floor, diamond-shaped flooring will bring some personality without overpowering the rest of the room.

The bathroom is the room in the house where you can get a little wild and creative without it interrupting the flow of your home. While some homeowners opt to carry their more traditional flooring into their bathroom for a cohesive look, many prefer to make a bold statement.

A major trend with any geometric tile flooring is pairing it with a cool grout color, accentuating the shape of the tile, and creating an eye-catching design. If you feel like getting crazy, this is the time and the place to do it.

Will the geometric bathroom flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

I think you’ll see young homeowners jumping on board with this trend over the next several years. While it’s uncertain if this trend will last throughout the rest of the home, I have a feeling it will become a bathroom flooring staple.

2022 Bathroom Flooring Trends: Texture and Finish

The bathroom is one of the only rooms in the home where (almost) anything goes as far as flooring texture. Scrapes, knots, real stone texture, smooth – you name it!

In terms of finish, there’s still a lot of variety, but people are starting to prefer less gloss and more authenticity and functionality.

Here’s a look at what we recommend.

Matte and Honed Bathroom Flooring Finishes

2021 bathroom flooring trends: matte octagon dot porcelain tile

The days of glossy floor tile are coming to an end, at least for a while. Flatter, less reflective finishes are now the top pick for most people, and the reasons go beyond looks alone.

When the surface of a tile is ground and down to a honed finish, it becomes less slippery. That’s a huge plus for a bathroom, where the risk of slipping is already a bit higher than the rest of the home. Additionally, matte finishes are easier to maintain. Scuffs and scrapes are less noticeable when the surface isn’t shiny.

Even though the finish might be “dull,” matte finish bathroom floor tiles are anything but boring. Manufacturers are coming up with tons of creative matte styles, from stone-look and wood-look to tiles that look like fabric.

Will the matte and honed bathroom flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Without a doubt, you’re going to see matte finishes on bathroom flooring for many years to come. The trend of natural textures practically requires a matte finish, not to mention how practical a flat finish can be. If you’re looking for more gloss in your life, I recommend you stick to wall tiles.

Smooth Bathroom Flooring

Smooth Sheet Vinyl flooring

Smooth-textured bathroom floor tiles in white limestone always look in beautiful contemporary bathrooms. In 2022, you’ll read a lot about texture. Knots, scrapes, brushes – everyone is talking about textured flooring. So where does that leave smooth bathroom floors? Still quite popular!

The texture trend is most popular in wood and wood-look flooring. While these looks are trending in the bathroom, the smooth stone look is still going strong.

While a smooth floor may look flat and dated in other rooms, in the bathroom it looks classic and expensive. This look tends to be one of the most timeless trends in bathroom flooring.

Will the smooth bathroom flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Always and forever. Smooth floors are classic options for bathrooms, and that won’t be changing anytime soon.

Handscraped Bathroom Flooring

Handscraped Bathroom Flooring: Shaw Pebble Hill 5

Handscraped looks instantly make your bathroom look timeless and expensive as it features long, ingrained scrapes with high variation between planks, making each plank appear handcrafted, unique, and rare. These are perfect for a rustic, farmhouse-style bathroom with plenty of character.

Because handscraped floors look truly finished, they are trendy not just with younger homeowners but also with more established homeowners as well. Handscraped floors are almost guaranteed to amp up your home value.

You’ll see trendy handscraped wood looks in just about every waterproof flooring option – vinyl, tile, laminate, etc. Each floor has different advantages, so it’s really up to you to determine what meets your needs.

Will the handscraped bathroom flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

This unique, individual, handcrafted look will stand the test of time. It looks expensive, and people love expensive.

SHOP HANDSCRAPED LAMINATE

Wirebrushed Bathroom Flooring

Wirebrushed bathroom flooring

Homeowners are loving weathered wirebrushed looks. Wirebrushed looks show subtle, intentional wire scratches leaving the appearance of exposed wood on the surface. These imperfections are smoother and more consistent than handscraped or distressed looks.

This trendy look adds character to your floor without looking unfinished.

In the last few years, wirebrushed floors were the leading trend in textured flooring. However, moving forward, I anticipate that handscraped and distressed looks will knock them out of the running pretty quickly.

Will the wirebrushed bathroom flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

This trend will likely take a backseat as more distressing and imperfections become the norm, but I don’t think wirebrushed floors will ever really go away for good.

SHOP WIREBRUSHED ENGINEERED WOOD

Distressed Bathroom Flooring

Close up distressed laminate plank

Distressed looks are often mistaken for handscraped. Distressed looks, however, look as though they’ve been through a lot of wear and tear. You can expect to see the appearance of scrapes, burns, knots, wormholes, and more, giving these floors an aged, antique look.

Setting the tone with a floor that looks almost historic instantly gives you an envy-inducing bathroom. Distressed floors make a great pairing with a classic clawfoot tub, stacked stone wall tiles, and any rustic decor.

Will the distressed bathroom flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

I do believe the distressed look will continue to be popular, particularly with younger generations. However, I don’t anticipate it will spread quite in the same way as handscraped and wirebrushed looks.

If you’re looking at long-term resale value, I would choose handscraped looks.

General Textured and Non-Slip Bathroom Flooring

2021 Bathroom Flooring Trends: Shaw Marlow 8

Not all textures are for the intention of the design. One popular choice in bathroom flooring is to add just a bit of texture to help avoid slipping and safety hazards.

This trend is more popular in homes where a simple slip can be a big deal. No one wants to be nervous to take a shower. Textured, non-slip bathroom tiles are great for the safety and resale of your home, and this extra precaution isn’t likely to change with the trends.

Will the textured and non-slip bathroom flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

It will always be necessary. Not super exciting, but it’s not changing anytime soon.

Conclusion

As you can see, a lot is going on in bathroom flooring right now. There are plenty of different, unique options trending that will likely stick around for years to come, which means your possibilities are endless.

If you’re looking to get started with new trendy bathroom flooring ideas, you can start here.

2022 Trending Kitchen Flooring Types

Okay, so I mentioned that, in the kitchen, you don’t want a high-maintenance kitchen floor. In 2022 and, I believe, for at least the next decade, you will see a surge in low-maintenance flooring like waterproof vinyl.

There are also a ton of more high-end luxury trends like marble and engineered wood. Take a look at how many options are available these days! It’s crazy.

Waterproof Vinyl Kitchen Flooring

This vinyl flooring is 100% waterproof. There are two options for waterproof vinyl floors: WPC vinyl and SPC vinyl. Both options are trendy right now, but SPC is slightly newer, and it’s growing faster.

WPC stands for wood plastic composite but is also commonly referred to as waterproof core. The core layer is completely waterproof. You’ll see WPC vinyl planks with prints mimicking the hottest wood trends including distressed and handscraped looks that can fool even a discerning eye.

Meanwhile, SPC is made from a stone-plastic composite core. It’s also entirely waterproof, but the core is more rigid. That’s why SPC is also called rigid core vinyl flooring. SPC is like WPC vinyl on steroids. You get the tough, waterproof, gorgeous floors WPC is known for with that new, extra-strong rigid core.

Will the waterproof vinyl kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Absolutely! Waterproof vinyl floors are the fastest growing floors on market, particularly in kitchens, bathrooms, and other water-prone areas.

Vinyl Sheet Kitchen Flooring

Mannington Benchmark 6' Vinyl Sheet

So what’s new in the world of sheet vinyl? Answer: just about everything! New colors, patterns, textures, and materials are offering homeowners an easy upgrade. Fiberglass cores and backing ensure better durability. Plus, the stone-look and wood-look textures have never looked better, boasting exquisite detail.

Natural looks aren’t the only area where vinyl sheets excel. Unlike most other vinyl products, sheets also offer bright, decorative patterns.

Best of all, vinyl sheets can be temporary, especially if they have that fiberglass backing. That means you can lay it out with ease, and pull it up without a lot of hassle. Renters rejoice! Finally, a temporary flooring solution that doesn’t look temporary.

Will the sheet vinyl flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

For sure, you’re going to see sheet vinyl making a big come-back in the years to come. It’s durable, easy to install, and versatile enough to come in tons of styles, patterns, and colors. What’s not to love?

Tile Kitchen Flooring

Tile Flooring Trends: Daltile Saddle Brook

I hesitate to call this a trend because tile floors have been the kitchen flooring staple for years. Tile is known for being durable and easy to clean, perfect for kitchens.

But, with the surge in wood kitchen flooring, is tile on its way out?

Not at all! Tile is still as trendy in kitchens as ever before. However, the trending tile looks have truly evolved over the last 5-10 years.

With current flooring trends, I talk a lot about technology. Technology has given us the ability to achieve virtually any look with any type of flooring.

The wood-look tile kitchen flooring trend is super hot right now. Tile manufacturers are keeping up with the times and following the trends of contemporary wood and stone. This means you can have the sleek, current kitchen of your dreams with good ol’ dependable tile flooring.

Will the tile kitchen last in 2022 and beyond?

Absolutely! I predict that tile will never fully go out of style in the kitchen

I just recommend following the current wood and stone flooring trends to get a tile look that will stay current for the lifetime of your floor.

Laminate Kitchen Flooring

14mm KronoSwiss Origin Wide Plank Laminate

Laminate was the original wood-look kitchen flooring. Before laminate took off, you didn’t see many kitchens with wood (or wood-look) floors.

Before laminate, kitchen floors were often tile, old-school vinyl, or even-older-school linoleum. Throwing an inexpensive wood-look option into the mix changed things.

If you ask me, I would say laminate flooring is responsible for many of the current kitchen flooring trends and other flooring trends, as well.

As technology improves, so does laminate flooring. You will see even more convincing wood looks and all of the current wood trends including handscraped wood looks, and distressed wood looks.

And! Now, there is even water-resistant laminate! Now this is flooring perfect for the kitchen!

Will the laminate kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

I don’t think so. Over the next couple of years, homeowners will probably continue to use laminate floors in their kitchens, and the wood-look will stay current.

However, I predict that newer, more waterproof options will likely be trending in the kitchen and all around the house over the next decade. If waterproof laminate advances more, we might see a comeback.

Engineered Wood Kitchen Flooring

Anderson Bandsaw Natural Timbers Engineered Wood

Sticking with the wood kitchen flooring trend, engineered wood is a relatively new kid on the block. A step up in durability and perception from laminate, engineered wood is the only option (aside from solid hardwood, obviously) that is made from real wood.

Engineered wood features a thin veneer top layer of solid wood; however, the remaining base of the product is made up of artificial materials. This base could be composed of plywood or high-density fiberboard.

If you want real wood in your kitchen, engineered wood is the way to go. It’s less expensive than solid hardwood and the artificial base is more water-resistant than solid wood.

Engineered wood is extremely durable and offers looks in just about every trending wood look. With no extra finishing or refinishing required, engineered wood is out-of-the-box ready and, often, super easy to install yourself. I think of it as the busy homeowner’s wood flooring

Will the engineered wood kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

I think so. It is the only option other than solid hardwood that looks exactly like the real deal. And people love the real deal. I believe engineered wood flooring will quickly become a kitchen staple

2022 Trending Kitchen Flooring Looks

New technology gives us the ability to realistically mimic countless natural and man-made materials in many different materials. This is changing the game in kitchen flooring and, really, flooring in general.

Below, you’ll see new, contemporary kitchen flooring looks that you never dreamed would be possible.

There are some pretty cool things happening. Some will turn into kitchen flooring staples, while some are just fads. Don’t worry; we’ll steer you in the right direction.

Wood-Look Kitchen Flooring

COREtec Pro Plus 7 Rigid Core Vinyl Planks

Wood and wood looks in the kitchen have been popular for years and years, but the real high quality looks weren’t accessible to everyone.

Solid hardwood flooring is expensive, finicky, and not ideal for areas where there will be a lot of moisture, like kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. While solid hardwood is still widely sought after in the kitchen, homeowners are beginning to discover all kinds of gorgeous options that rival solid hardwood’s sharp looks.

And, no, I’m not just talking about laminate, unless it’s waterproof. Waterproof laminate is new and awesome and trending!

I’m mostly talking about waterproof vinyl planks and wood-look tile flooring. These two are perfect for the high demands of even the busiest kitchen.

With these new durable and waterproof wood looks, you can achieve any trending wood style in your kitchen, worry-free.

Will the wood-look kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

1,000 times, yes! Wood-look flooring is a trend across the entire home that isn’t going away anytime soon.

This trend will only increase, both in the kitchen and out, over the next decade and beyond.

Stone-Look Kitchen Flooring

Shaw Great Plains 12' wide Vinyl Sheet

Stone-look kitchen flooring is perfect for the more rustic or industrial kitchen looks. While not as popular as the wood-look style, stone-look floors are still a go-to for many homeowners.

The thing about natural stone is that it’s more expensive and requires extra maintenance because it’s porous. If you’re not up for that, the good news is vinyl and tile floors can mimic the gorgeous look of stone. You can achieve these gorgeous stone looks without the price tag or the maintenance hassles.

A few of the most popular stone looks in 2022 will be:

Slate-look flooring: Clean, natural, and edgy, slate kitchen floors are great for minimalist decor. Just like marble, you can expect to see slate looks in ceramic and vinyl tile.Limestone-look flooring: With limestone-look flooring, you can enjoy the natural beauty and color variations of stone without the higher price.Travertine-look flooring: Travertine-look flooring is classic. With the growing trends of unique, designer shapes in flooring, travertine is experiencing a well-deserved refresh. You can now find the gorgeous, sought-after look of travertine in more modern styles.Concrete-look flooring: Concrete is a little different from natural stone looks, but it’s still worth mentioning. If you’re a fan of the industrial or warehouse aesthetic, then you’re going to love concrete-look flooring. It’s minimalist, contemporary, and oh-so chic.

Will the stone-look kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

You betcha! Stone looks are classic in the kitchen and, with technological advancements, you will only see them more often over the next couple of decades.

Marble-Look Kitchen Flooring

Daltile RevoTile - Stone Visual

The kitchen is one of the best places in the home to pull out all the stops when it comes to renovation because it’s guaranteed to increase home value. If you’re looking for a high-end luxury floor, then marble is for you.

Real marble kitchen flooring offers one-of-a-kinds looks with beautiful swirling patterns. Bright, clean, elegant marble floors have been one of the hottest gems on the flooring market for centuries.

But maybe you’re working on a tight budget. Plenty of marble-look tiles can give you a convincing appearance with a smaller price tag. Ceramic tile manufacturers have mastered the marble look and they bring it to you in a less porous, more durable, less expensive, and more accessible material. It is the best of all worlds.

Will the marble kitchen last in 2022 and beyond?

For sure. Marble is timeless. If you invest in a marble look, your home will always be in style.

Concrete-Look Kitchen Flooring

Concrete looks are making their way into contemporary interior design! Huge slabs of concrete tiles, concrete countertops, you name it. This modern, industrial look is in.

While warm, rustic looks are prominent in 2022, there is still a niche for a more cool, detached look. A rustic wood floor is perfect for your family home, while a concrete-look tile is an awesome touch to a trendy apartment

It’s a more specific aesthetic, but a relevant one to look out for this year.

Will the concrete-look kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Eh, I don’t think so. It’s just so contradictory to all the other warm, natural trends we’re seeing. We expect the industrial concrete look to stay trendy for the next few years and then trail off when something new pops up.

Decorative Kitchen Flooring

Daltile Bee Hive

More and more people are using their floor to express their personalities, and nothing packs a punch quite like a decorative tile or decorative vinyl flooring. This is a chance to get creative, with cutting edge, graphic styles that make your floor look like a work of art.

Decorative tile floors can be found in a wide range of styles that match the rest of your space. Here are a couple of decorative tile styles that are going to be huge in 2022:

Geometric kitchen flooring: Get creative with bold shapes, unique colors, and contemporary looks including hexagons, triangles, diamonds, and more.Encaustic tile flooring: With encaustic-look tile, you can expect a bold, highly detailed style, with a lot of colors. Popular styles range from geometrics to florals, to old-world and Victorian. These gorgeous patterns are especially popular in kitchens.Terracotta tile flooring: This is a more rustic, almost handmade look. Terra cotta means “baked earth” in Italian, referring to the oranges and browns in tile. While this flooring won’t be for everyone, it certainly makes an impression.Terrazzo tile flooring: The original terrazzo tiles were made from recycled chips of marble, glass, and concrete, which created a unique speckled look. Now, you can get that sought-after terrazzo look in porcelain tile!

Will the decorative kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

For a while. This trend is bold, and while lots of people will love it, others might want something simpler. For that reason, if you’re planning to resell your home in the next few years, it’s a good idea to go with something more neutral.

2022 Kitchen Flooring Style Trends

If you’re going for a particular style in the kitchen, you want to make sure that this style will stay current along with the floor that goes with it. Here’s a look at which kitchen styles will be trending this year.

Farmhouse Kitchen Flooring

Daltile Cinematic

Farmhouse style is rustic, but with more charm and clean lines. This style has been super hot in 2020 and will certainly carry on in 2022.

This is probably because it combines the old and the new in a way that’s beautiful and interesting. Often, the color palette is crisp white walls, cabinets, and ceilings with exposed beams and rustic-looking wood.

Contrasting your floor with the wall color makes the flooring be the star of the show. Choose a handscraped, distressed, or reclaimed look for your floors. I would go with a dark gray oak look or dark browns with color variations. The more distressed, the better!

Will the large farmhouse kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Absolutely! While the ultra distressed looks may be more fleeting, handscraped is here to stay and a little distress won’t put you out of style either.

Contemporary Kitchen Flooring

Revotile tile flooring

Well, I mean, this makes sense. Since contemporary means the looks that are popular right now, it absolutely should be trending!

The look of contemporary flooring is clean, smooth, but bold. This is perfect for the open kitchen floor plans that have become super popular over the last few years.

If you want a pop of color in your kitchen, choose a neutral floorwith a light finish. It will make your colors stand out and a light finish makes your kitchen look more open and airy– perfect for this style.

Will the large farmhouse kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

These smooth neutral looks will, likely, always be stylish. However, I believe that what we think of as “contemporary” is currently in the process of a pretty big evolution and that, soon, the contemporary look will include more handscraped and charactered looks

Coastal Kitchen Flooring

COREtec Pro Plus XL Enhanced 9 Rigid Core Planks

Coastal style brings the beach to you. Don’t mistake this as a beach house only style though; mainlanders are adopting it as well.

Coastal style is light, airy, with plenty of beachy colors like white, gray, blue, and sandy tan. This pairs well with trending whitewashed kitchen floors or a beautiful blonde wood look.

Will the coastal kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

The light and airy look, yes. But the whole coastal vibe? I wouldn’t count on it. I’d recommend choosing a blonde wood and steering away from the whitewashed super coastal look.

2022 Trending Kitchen Flooring Colors

Going into 2022, cool, contemporary tones are in, as well as whites and grays. You’ll also see a few warmer, middle-of-the-road options sneaking in, especially with more comfortable, homey styles

“Oak Hardwood is still the king of kitchen flooring. The number one thing we are seeing is a throwback to lighter colored hardwood. Gone are the days of dark wood floors, now we are seeing lighter brown tones close to fruitwood. Our clients are asking for brown and gray tones over the reddish hues of the 1990s.”  – Bryan Sebring,Sebring Design

Blonde Wood (and Wood-Look) Kitchen Flooring

Smokey Mountain Oak Engineered Wood

For years, lighter floors were viewed as outdated or inexpensive. That is no longer the case. Not by a long shot!

As more homeowners embrace the light, airy feel in their home, you will see a huge resurgence in blonde wood (and wood-look) floors. Blonde floors, in particular, can give you that light timeless feel

With blonde wood, your decorating possibilities are endless. You can go for a chic, contemporary feel or a rustic, homey vibe. All without changing your floors.

The open, light, airy look is especially popular in modern kitchens. Homeowners are now steering away from sharper, modern, industrial looks and trending towards an updated farmhouse style. Light floors are perfect for this!

Contrary to ultra-dark espresso looks, blonde floors make your kitchen feel larger and more open, especially if you use large planks. But we’ll get to that later on.

Will the blonde kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

If you ask me, the blonde wood look will become a trend-turned-classic before you can even think about switching it up to something new. If you like them, go for it! They’ll be a hit for quite a while.

Whitewashed Wood (and Wood-Look) Kitchen Flooring

Emser Tile Barn

The whitewashed look is more of a west coast / California trend that is starting to spread across the country. Well, some parts.

As that relaxed, California vibe is spreading, so are the floors that come with it. And white-washed wood is at the top of the list.

In addition to the California, beachy look, whitewashed floors are also excellent for the now-trending farmhouse style homes (similar to the blonde wood looks we discussed earlier), particularly in the kitchen.

Now, when I saw “whitewashed”, I don’t mean a smooth, finished white floor. Whitewashed wood and wood-look floors typically show signs of wear with the darker colors peeking out from underneath. It fits right in with the aged and worn trends happening across all styles of flooring.

Whitewash will make your home look brighter, bigger, and more relaxed. It can give that “beachy” feel or also an upscale contemporary feel, depending on the rest of your decor.

Will the whitewashed kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Over on the east coast, homeowners are still turning their nose up at the whole west coast look and feel. If this trend lasts, it will be regional, at best. If you’re looking for a light wood look, I suggest going for a more versatile blonde look instead.

Just like the whitewashed wood is trending, bright white tiles are super hot in the kitchen, too. This year, the theme is contrast. You will see luminous whites in unique shapes like fans or hexagons. Or, white tiles setting the backdrop for bright, colorful kitchen decor.

The marble-look tile trend is going to be huge, especially in kitchens, bathrooms, and commercial spaces.

White tiles, like white wood, instantly make your kitchen look bigger, especially if you use large format tiles. Put these tiles in a kitchen with lots of natural sunlight for a truly special look.

A great thing about choosing white tiles is you have so many options for counters, cabinets, and decor.  Is there anything that doesn’t go with white? I don’t think so.

Will the white tile kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Yes! White is super hot right now. As dark looks near the end of their trend cycle, whites are only becoming more popular.

And the marble look? It will never go out of style.

Gray Kitchen Flooring

Gray has been the hottest trend in flooring, cabinets, paint, and basically everything for the past few years. While its massive popularity is declining slightly in favor of lighter wood looks, it’s still a great choice if you want a more contemporary look.

In addition to looking chic and trendy, gray floors set the tone of a cool, contemporary kitchen. They give you a neutral backdrop for decorating with bold colors and creative patterns. Gray floors are the perfect backdrop for this kind of statement.

Will the gray kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Heck, yes! Gray will be hot and trendy for decades to come. I wouldn’t give it a second thought!

High Color Variation Kitchen Flooring

COREtec Pro Plus 7 Rigid Core Vinyl Planks

High color variation is trending in wood (and wood looks) as well as tile. Wood looks typically feature color variation between planks, whereas high variation in tile typically refers to the amount of color variation in each plank.

Homeowners love the natural, rustic look that higher color variation provides. In nature, stone and wood aren’t so uniform; there are all kinds of inconsistencies.

Now, with modern technology, you can achieve these more random, natural looks with laminate, vinyl, engineered wood, ceramic tile, you name it! This makes your kitchen floor more of a statement piece and tends to pair best with simple but contemporary decor.

Will the high color variation kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

We’re probably nearing the end of high variation flooring being a super popular trend. The challenge with something bold like high color variation is it’s a very specific aesthetic. More subtle variation in wood looks will likely be trendy for the next decade or so. Although, I predict high variation kitchen tiles will stay trendy significantly longer.

2022 Kitchen Flooring Layout and Pattern Trends

Over the past few years, we’ve seen a huge resurgence in patterned floors. And it all started in the kitchen!

Unfortunately, when people hear the word “pattern” or the dreaded “parquet” (which, BTW, just means pattern), they imagine the horribly out of date 1970s parquet wood floors.

The updated, trending parquet looks, however, are anything but dated. This year, you’ll see sleek, upscale, modern patterns in the kitchen and, really, throughout the home.

“With the popularity of modern and transitional styles in kitchen cabinets, adding textures to the floor like borders have come back in style with chevron and herringbone patterns being the two most popular.” – Bryan Sebring,Sebring Design

Chevron and Herringbone Kitchen Flooring

12mm Mannington Palace Waterproof Laminate

Some people may think chevron and herringbone are the same. Let’s clear up that misconception. While similar, they have their differences.

Herringbone pattern floors create a contemporary zig-zag pattern by connecting two planks at a 90-degree angle. This makes your floor look pretty unique, and it’s easy to DIY, so it’s a popular trend with homeowners.

Chevron floors require flooring to be angled and come together to a point. These floors also feature an arrow-like design, but the planks are angled and come together to a point.

You can find a lot of products with these patterns already built-in, so you don’t have to put in all that effort during installation. I love it when you can take a shortcut, and no one’s ever going to notice. They’ll all be gushing over your dazzling floor without realizing how easy it was.

chevron vs. herringbone

Will the chevron and herringbone kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

This trend isn’t likely to last forever, but it sure looks pretty while it’s here.

And, it will probably stay trendy in the kitchen the longest.

Hexagon Tile Kitchen Flooring

Daltile Bee Hive

Hexagon tiles first gained popularity in the early 20th century, typically accompanied by subway wall tiles. They can provide a similar classic, vintage look to subway tile floors. They started as smaller, busier-looking tiles, but increasingly larger sizes have made them even more popular.

These days, you’ll see ultra-modern, almost futuristic looks. Imagine super clean, sharp lines, whites, blacks and grays, and very minimalist decor. Even metallics! That’s this new futuristic wave of hexagon kitchen floor tiles.

Will the hexagon tile kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Sparingly. I do believe you’ll continue to see hexagon tile kitchen floors over the next decade. But, the bigger trend will continue to be larger tiles and planks. This is more of a niche market

Trickling Pattern Kitchen Flooring

Daltile Uniform Mosaics

You’ve probably seen this trend on Pinterest. Trickling floor transitions are the hottest new craze and for a good reason. It looks super cool!

Instead of transitioning to new flooring with a straight line, trickled flooring slowly blends two contrasting flooring types (like tile and planks) so they “trickle” into each other.

This pattern is often achieved with hexagons, but any tile shape will work to create a one-of-a-kind look as you transition from the kitchen to other rooms in your home. It’s the ultimate way to express your creativity.

Will the trickling floor pattern trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Maybe! This bold design is not for everyone, but it does add a unique modern touch to any space. My guess is that the trickling floors trend will grow more in the coming years, but never become the go-to option for flooring.

Checkered Kitchen Flooring

slate flex tiles

That classic black and white checkered kitchen floor is making a big comeback! Retro and vintage black and white flooring has grown in popularity over the last few years.

Checkered kitchen floors are going to be super trendy in 2022. You’ll see a huge resurgence in everything from this time, including the vintage color accents and that quaint, cozy style.

This refreshed vintage look is a great way to update a smaller kitchen. In those days, most kitchens were half the size of the kitchens we have now and the style fit perfectly into that small, homey space.

Personally, I don’t think it would work so well with a huge open floor plan.

Will the checkered kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Not for long. I think this is a look that will be super popular with younger, millennial homeowners for several years to come. However, if you’re thinking about long-term resale value with a wealthier market, I would go with a wood look, instead.

At this point, short, thin planks look pretty outdated. Going with smaller planks could significantly reduce your home’s resale value. And also, they just won’t look as good.

Now, I do think we’ll get to a point where enough is enough already and we will maintain these new traditional sizes. But, I recommend getting on board with the large plank trend

Wonder why they’re so popular? Large-format tiles make your kitchen look bigger, especially if you choose a light color. Additionally, larger tiles = fewer grout lines. I hate grout anywhere in the house but especially in the kitchen.

Grout is the one thing that makes cleaning tile kind of a pain. It stains more easily than the tile and, because it’s sunken a bit from the tile, it’s harder to get in there and give it a good scrub.

Will the large format tile kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Without a doubt! Large format tiles and wide planks are here to stay. In the kitchen, and across the home.

2022 Kitchen Flooring Texture Trends

This year, texture will be more prevalent than ever before. In addition to wirebrushed and handscraped wood looks, you’ll also start to see more distressed looks in the kitchen.

As I mentioned above, high variation is in! Not just for colors but textures, as well. You’ll see more and more kitchen floors where no two planks look the same, particularly with handscraped looks.

Handscraped Wood (and Wood-Look) Kitchen Flooring

Johnson Hardwood Toscana Hickory Engineered Wood

This one is my favorite! Handscraped looks instantly make your kitchen look timeless and expensive. These are perfect for a rustic kitchen with plenty of character. They’re also a great backdrop for industrial kitchens, as well.

Because handscraped floors look truly finished, they are trendy not just with younger homeowners but with more established homeowners, as well. Handscraped floors are almost guaranteed to amp up your home value.

You’ll see trendy handscraped wood looks in traditional wood, engineered wood, laminate, vinyl and tile. And, honestly, they’re all in! Each floor just has different advantages so it’s really up to you what you’re looking for.

Will the handscraped kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

This unique, individual, handcrafted look will absolutely stand the test of time. It looks expensive, and people love expensive things.

HANDSCRAPED WOOD

Wirebrushed Wood (and Wood-Look) Kitchen Flooring

Shaw Cornerstone Oak Engineered Wood

Homeowners are loving weathered wirebrushed looks. This trendy look adds character to your floor without looking unfinished.

Another bonus of wirebrushed floors? They hide dirt really well so you don’t have to clean your floors as often! And, if you’re anything like me, that is a huge selling point. Especially in the kitchen.

In 2020, wirebrushed floors were the leading trend in textured flooring. However, moving forward, I anticipate that handscraped and distressed looks will knock them out of the running pretty quickly.

While the wirebrushed floors are cool, if the trend towards imperfections and character continues, distressed and handscraped wood will likely have more to offer in both variety and character.

Will the wirebrushed kitchen trend last in 2022 and beyond?

While I don’t think it will last forever in the entire home, I do think wirebrushed looks will always have a place in the kitchen. Especially with their ability to hide dirt.

However, if you want a seamless floor throughout your home, I would recommend going handscraped instead.

WIREBRUSHED WOOD

Distressed Wood (and Wood-Look) Kitchen Flooring

Shaw Reflections Maple Engineered Wood

People love floors with character and it’s no secret that distressed floors have a whole lot of it!

With intentional scrapes, knotholes, and even burns, distressed floor textures are meant to give your floor character, like it’s much older than it actually is.

Setting the tone with a floor that looks almost historic instantly gives you an envy-inducing decor. Distressed floors make a great pairing with brick walls, fireplaces, stacked stone, farmhouse kitchens, basically every other hot interior design trend going at the moment.

Will the distressed kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

I do believe distressed looks will continue to be popular, particularly with younger generations. However, I don’t anticipate it will spread quite in the same way as handscraped and wirebrushed looks.

If you’re looking at long term resale value, I would choose handscraped looks

2022 Trending Vinyl Flooring Looks

As I mentioned, the coolest thing about this year’s vinyl flooring trends is the realistic looks manufacturers can accomplish. Once upon a time, realistic wood-look vinyl flooring was unheard of. Now, I bet if I showed you some current options, you’d never guess they were vinyl!

Currently, you will find vinyl flooring available in styles that mimic current wood and tile flooring trends, and even a few vinyl-specific trends as well.

Wood-Look Vinyl

The consensus among design experts is that wood-look flooring and wood accents are the new neutral. Wood looks are incredibly trendy and versatile enough to go with tons of styles, from farmhouse to contemporary.

These days, wood-look vinyl is just as realistic as wood-look laminate

“Better technology is constantly being created and used to make vinyl flooring look more like real hardwood. Whatever you see trending in engineered hardwood, whether it is a rustic oil-finished Oak or a more contemporary smooth maple, the vinyl flooring industry will be quick to create a visual that will be nearly impossible to tell apart from the real deal. ” – Carly Notcha,US Floors

With that said, there are quite a few textures and wood-look species you should keep an eye out for this year. In 2022, vinyl manufactures will only be producing even more convincing wood looks mimicking the hottest wood flooring look and texture trends.

While vinyl typically uses embossing and prints for their looks rather than real scrapes and wirebrushing used in hardwood, you can still expect to see vinyl floors mimicking these looks in 2022 and beyond. Here’s the breakdown, just for you.

Trending Wood-Look Vinyl Textures

Handscraped: These looksfeature long, ingrained scrapes with high variation between planks, making each plank appear handcrafted, unique, and rare.Wirebrushed looks show subtle, intentional wire scratches leaving the appearance of exposed wood on the surface. These imperfections are smoother and more consistent than handscraped or distressed looks.Distressed: Distressed vinyl looks as though it’s been through a lot of wear and tear. You can expect to see the appearance of scrapes, burns, knots, wormholes, and more, giving these floors an aged, antique lookEmbossed in register Registered embossing means the textured surface is designed to exactly match the wood-look image underneath, so it looks and feels like the real thing.Micro beveled edges A bevel on the edges of a plank or tile adds more definition between each piece for an even more realistic look.Painted beveled edgesWant even more definition? A painted bevel adds an extra touch of realism with painted bevels to better emphasize individual planks.

Trending Vinyl Wood-Look Species

Oak This is one of the most popular wood looks for vinyl flooring. Oak looks feature straight grains and light brown tones.Pine A pine wood-look plank will feature a range of colors, often with prevalent knot textures.HickoryThis is one of the lighter wood-look options, with delicate grains that offer a lot of character.Walnut: The deep coloring and bold wood grain of walnut wood-look vinyl make this a great option for a classic or contemporary space.Acacia The pronounced grain and occasional knots create a distinct look that’s perfect for any aesthetic.Maple The light to medium brown tones of maple wood-look flooring deliver a classic aesthetic.

Will the wood-look vinyl flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

1,000 times, yes! Wood-look flooring will be trending for the foreseeable future and vinyl will only gain momentum and popularity over the next decade.

Stone-Look Vinyl

breccia-stone-flex-tiles

Once upon a time, porcelain and ceramic tile were the only way to get a beautiful, durable, realistic stone look. These days, technology allows for more types of flooring to share the scene. So everyone has to make their looks more convincing, stylish, and durable.

While laminate has always focused almost exclusively on wood looks, vinyl is known for its versatility in style and looks. You will typically see stone looks in luxury vinyl tiles (LVT).

Just like wood-look vinyl, stone-look vinyl uses the same technologies to create looks mimicking gorgeous, timeless natural stone. You don’t have to pay a fortune for soft, porous marble; stone-look vinyl flooring has changed the game.

Trending Stone-Look Vinyl Types

Marble: Chic and timeless, marble is one of those looks that will never go out of style. Marble is known for its unique veining and gorgeous translucence. It’s also known for being soft and porous. In 2022, you’ll see lots of marble looks, particularly Carrara, in durable, nonporous LVT.Limestone The gorgeous natural patterns of limestone are highly sought-after for a luxurious look, but the real thing can be high-maintenance. Now you can get beautiful limestone-look vinyl tiles at a fraction of the cost.Travertine: Travertine is the floor of castles and ancient architecture. But it’s only increasing in popularity in 2022. The versatile, neutral colors with distinctive patterns and veining are a timeless look that you can now find in affordable, low-maintenance LVT!Slate: Sharp and contemporary slate looks will be super trendy in 2022. Although the most common will be the dark chalkboard look, slate comes in a variety of colors and slate-look vinyl will mimic them all.

Will the stone-look vinyl flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Yes! Vinyl is giving porcelain and ceramic tile a run for their money with equally convincing stone looks with more warmth and resilience than traditional tile.

Stone looks are timeless, and now that they are more accessible, you will see stone-look vinyl well into the next decade and beyond.

Concrete-Look Vinyl

Shaw World's Fair 6 Vinyl Tile

Concrete floors are pretty popular right now. People are still experimenting with that industrial look and concrete can provide a sleek, upscale, modern look with the right decor.

While concrete is known for being a cost-effective flooring option, vinyl flooring, even luxury vinyl tile, is also known for being super affordable.

But you know what vinyl is not known for? Poor, aching feet from standing all day on a floor with absolutely zero give. Concrete is not awesome on your joints, so homeowners are now looking for this hot look in other flooring options.

Vinyl flooring is resilient and constantly innovating in realism. In 2022, you’ll see concrete-look vinyl in trendy condos, loft apartments, and lots of up-and-coming spaces

Will the concrete-look vinyl flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Again, maybe over the next few years, but eventually, the trend towards nature will knock ’em out of the limelight

Decorative and Patterned Vinyl

Mannington Revive 12' Luxury Vinyl Sheet

Geometric patterns are huge in tile and carpet right now, so it only makes sense that this trend is trickling over into vinyl. Of course, natural and authentic looks are still kings of the vinyl castle, but it’s nice to see designers mixing it up a bit.

Some vinyl planks are now coming out with decorative and graphic styles to rival tile. Parquet patterns and classic trellis designs line up perfectly from plank to plank. Since vinyl planks are way easier to install than tile, lots of DIYers are going to gravitate to this alternative.

Kitchens and bathrooms are especially primed to benefit from this innovation. This is where creative flooring thrives, and it’s also where vinyl really excels. Honestly, it seems like the perfect combination.

Will the decorative vinyl flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

This trend will continue to grow. This is a brand new frontier for luxury vinyl, and I could see a developing need for more decorative looks with the benefits of quality vinyl. At least for the next few years, I predict you’ll see this trend sticking around.

2022 Trending Vinyl Flooring Types

The hottest types of vinyl floors have been (and will continue to be) SPC vinyl, WPC vinyl, luxury vinyl planks (LVP), luxury vinyl tiles (LVT), and luxury vinyl sheets. They really take things to the next level as far as looks, durability, and features.

WPC Vinyl

WPC stands for wood plastic composite but is also commonly referred to as waterproof core

WPC vinyl plank flooring and WPC vinyl tile flooring are best known for being 100% waterproof. You can think of WPC flooring as luxury vinyl flooring amped up a notch with a special waterproof core that makes it perfect for just about any room in the house.

Plus? The looks and realism are top-notch. You’ll see WPC vinyl planks with prints mimicking the hottest wood trends including distressed and handscraped looks that can fool even a discerning eye.

WPC vinyl is popular in homes thanks to its durability, fully waterproof floor, and that comforting bit of give underfoot. You’ll see them all over the home but especially in kitchens, bathrooms, and basements

Will the WPC vinyl flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Yes! WPC flooring will remain popular over the next several years, and likely, beyond.

WPC’s cool new cousin!

Rigid core a.k.a. SPC vinyl flooring is exactly what you’d expect: vinyl flooring with a tough, sturdy, rigid core. The rigid core allows you to install your vinyl floor in areas you wouldn’t normally be able to.

You see, most subfloors are inherently uneven. It’s just not common to have a perfectly smooth subfloor hanging out waiting for you to come put your dream floor on top of it. This new rigid plank technology helps to eliminate ripples and waves that are often caused by uneven subfloors.

SPC is like WPC vinyl on steroids. You get the tough, waterproof, gorgeous floors WPC is known for with that new, extra-strong rigid core. It’s no wonder this new flooring idea is taking off at lightning speeds!

Will the SPC vinyl flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Absolutely! 2022 will just be the beginning of a trend I expect to see grow for decades to come. It will probably even overstock WPC.

Luxury Vinyl Planks (LVP)

COREtec Plus 7

This is where some people get confused. LVP, LVT, and WPC/SPC vinyl are not interchangeable terms.

All WPC and SPC vinyl planks are a step above luxury vinyl planks because they’re waterproof.

“Luxury” means LVP is tougher, more durable, and more beautiful than older, outdated vinyl planks. These luxury vinyl planks feature a protective wear layer that works as a bodyguard to keep your floor safe from all the elements.

But! LVP is not waterproof. That’s fine because maybe you don’t need that extra-tough waterproof core for your living room. A little bit of luxury is all you need.

You will see realistic LVP prints in all the hottest wood trends without but with way less maintenance.

Will the luxury vinyl plank flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Absolutely. In the coming years, you will only see more vinyl as it begins to overtake laminate flooring.

Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT)

Smooth Flex Tiles

Luxury vinyl tiles are very similar to luxury vinyl planks, simply in tile form. I know, it was really difficult to get that from the name.

LVT typically offers realistic natural stone looks. It’s a warmer, more resilient alternative to tile, still giving gorgeous stone looks at an affordable price.

When vinyl first started gaining popularity, it was all about the tiles. This was before manufacturers developed ultra-convincing wood looks.

These tiles are still trendy; stone looks are classic and will never go out of style. However, I would steer you towards luxury vinyl planks over luxury vinyl tiles

Will the luxury vinyl tile flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Yes and no. Luxury vinyl tiles will maintain popularity, but luxury vinyl planks will take off over the next decade while LVT stays consistent.

2022 Vinyl Flooring Installation Trends

I know, I know; there is nothing “trendy” sounding about flooring installation. No matter how big of a flooring enthusiast you are, it’s doubtful you sit at home thinking “OMG I am so excited about this trendy loose lay vinyl flooring!”

It’s not necessarily the look or the style that is trending here; it’s the idea that these new options are now available.

You see, vinyl flooring is all about making your life easier. Less maintenance, easier installation, more longevity. I’ve said it before and it still holds true: vinyl is the busy homeowner’s flooring

Loose Lay Vinyl

Installing loose lay vinyl planks could not be easier. Here’s what you need to install them: perimeter tape and the planks.

And before you worry that this affects the durability, these are high-quality luxury vinyl floors, many with lifetime warranties. Simple and dependable.

Loose lay planks are relatively new to the world of vinyl flooring. Now, many of the trendy wood-look luxury vinyl planks come in these DIY-friendly loose lay options.

Will the loose lay vinyl flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Probably. My prediction is that manufacturers will trend towards interlocking planks more than loose lay.

However, manufacturers will continue to produce beautiful loose lay vinyl planks to appease the DIY market. Once the floor is installed, no one will know the difference, so this is simply more of a preference.

Groutable Vinyl Tiles

Vinyl tiles have been competing with porcelain and ceramic tile for years as they mimic natural stone looks with less maintenance and a lower price tag. Tile has this wonderful reputation as durable, high-quality flooring.

Butvinyl is probably the best option on the flooring market when you look at durability, style, price, and maintenance. It’s only going to get better.

Now, amazingly, vinyl manufacturers have created groutable vinyl tile, just like traditional porcelain and ceramic tile. At last, you can find luxury vinyl tiles that look just like their ceramic competitors but with more warmth and resilience

In the next few years, you will see lots of stone-look groutable vinyl tile options popping up all over the flooring market.

Will the groutable vinyl tile trend last in 2022 and beyond?

I do think it will stay in style, but I don’t foresee it becoming the next big thing. I still think wood-look SPC vinyl is where it’s at in the vinyl world.

Homeowners are increasingly using flooring to set the tone or feel of their home. That means, we need more options! And manufacturers are responding with more beautiful colors than ever before.

Of course, not all of them are trending. Here are the best vinyl floor colors to stay trendy in 2022.

With versatile blond wood looks, your decorating possibilities are endless. You can go for a chic, contemporary feel or a rustic, homey vibe all without changing your floors.

Blonde vinyl does something that’s kind of magic. It makes your home seem way bigger. It’s true; blonde wood-look vinyl makes any room feel larger and more open, especially if you use large planks. But we’ll get to that later on.

Whitewashed Wood-Look Vinyl Flooring

The whitewashed look is more of a west coast/California trend that is starting to spread across the country. It’s becoming popular for the farmhouse kitchen look as well. A whitewash style makes everything look cool, clean, and artfully antiqued.

Now, when I say “whitewashed,” I don’t mean a smooth, finished white floor. Whitewashed wood-look floors typically show signs of wear with the darker colors peeking out from underneath. It fits right in with the 2022 aged and worn trends happening across all styles of flooring.

Whitewash will make your home look brighter, bigger, and more relaxed. It can give that “beachy” feel or also an upscale contemporary feel, depending on the rest of your decor.

Will the whitewashed vinyl flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Over on the east coast, homeowners are still turning their nose up at the whole west coast look and feel. If this trend lasts, it will be regional, at best. If you’re looking for a light wood look, I suggest going for a more versatile blonde look instead.

Feeling blue? That doesn’t have to be such a bad thing with blue vinyl flooring. In fact, this is one of the newest color trends to hit the market as cooler tones take over.

You’ll find blue more with the decorative side of vinyl (because who’s ever heard of blue wood?). It’s becoming more common with geometric and graphic patterns in light grayish-blue.

Keep in mind, we’re talking light, almost gray-blues, here. Don’t run out and buy neon blue flooring thinking you’re a trendsetter. In this case, the more reserved and more neutral you go, the better.

Will the blue vinyl flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

2022 Vinyl Flooring Layout and Pattern Trends

“The way you lay a flooring pattern can really spice up whether it is trendy or not. You can pick a very classic floor but lay it in a herringbone pattern to add drama to any room. Herringbone and Chevron patterns are showing up everywhere, as well as laying a room on a diagonal.” – Courtney Greger,My Flipping Job

This year, patterned floors are a huge hit.

Unfortunately, when people hear the word “pattern” or the dreaded “parquet” (which, BTW, just means pattern), they imagine the horribly out of date 1970’s parquet floors.

Don’t worry – today’s patterns are anything but dated. You’ll see sleek, upscale, modern designs as well as larger and larger tiles and planks.

Chevron and Herringbone Vinyl Floors

COREtec Plus Enhanced Herringbone Waterproof Vinyl

First, let me clear up a little misconception. Chevron and herringbone are very similar, but each has its own distinction.

Chevron floors require flooring to be angled and come together to a point. Although, some manufacturers are producing vinyl tile and vinyl sheet products with the hexagon and chevron patterns in the tile itself, which is pretty darn cool if you ask me.

Herringbone achieves a similar look by connecting two planks at a 90-degree angle as seen below.

chevron vs. herringbone

For traditional vinyl planks, herringbone is much more accessible than chevron. However, the chevron vinyl tiles and sheets allow you to achieve this look without spending extra money on materials and installation.

Long-plank herringbone patterns are going to be super hot over the next year, especially among young homeowners. But I suspect you’ll also see a surge in chevron tiles, especially in kitchens, as well.

Will the chevron and herringbone vinyl flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

This trend isn’t likely to last forever, but it sure looks pretty while it’s here.

And, it will probably stay trendy in the kitchen the longest.
